"I'm a responsible breeder and encourage people to get dogs from breeders or a breed rescue first before adopting a stray from a local pound, heres why.

Its not because they are bad dogs, Or that they (probably) have genetic defaults or conditions.

Its because a responsible breeder cares deeply about the dogs they produce. They are health tested, well socialized, display the proper temperament for their breed, display the proper structure for their breed (This is more important that you think from a noncosmetic stnadpoint) Ie Hip displaysia, Slipping patellas etc.
They know their dogs well and their breed well and their puppies well; if they get someone that has filled out their puppy questionnaire and sounds like a great home for one of their puppies they follow up on it, do a home visit, let them come visit the parents and puppies and make absolutely certain they are a good match for a puppy of their breed, and if anything at all happens where the puppy buyer can't keep the puppy they will under every circumstance take it back.

Think about it, not all dogs in the pound are random strays. They come from Backyard bred litters that some Joe Shmoe bought in the paper for 100 bucks, it ate the furniture, got too big, didn't work out so they dumped it at a shelter. Meanwhile the BYB is selling more ill tempered, ill bred, un-health tested worm riddled puppies to more unsuspected Shmoe's who will do the same thing when they find their BYB 'Saint Bernard' has displaysia and requires a $7,000.00 surgery that they can't possibly afford. A terrible condition that would have been easily prevented by testing the parents and not producing such a litter.

When buying from a reputable breeder you eliminate the unknowns. You've seen/met the parents, have been shown their achievements and health clearances, your breeder likely has a contract and health guarantee, they MAKE SURE they know where their puppies go and will take them back if the buyer cannot keep them. Its breeders like these who's dogs do not end up cluttering the shelters.

For a family looking for a 'good dog' Save yourself heartache, and headache from adopting a BYB bred mutt that (could very likely) have extensive life shortening health problems in the very near future costing you thousands of dollars. Get a better security blanket by going to a breeder and purchasing a healthy, happy puppy that will be well socialized and ready to make the best family dog ever through continued training and regular vet checkups.

Thats why I encourage purchasing from a reputable breeder. I won't say getting a shelter dog is bad. My first dog I found on Petfinder, and shes 16 years old and still active. BUT she had better-than-most circumstances.

I didn't find her in the regular petfinder section, but in the classifieds. She is a confirmed Pharaoh Hound X GSD mix because her previous owners got her from a breeder in Colorado that produced dogs(mixes or not) based on the particular waiting list they gathered. Oakley from born because of a 12 family waiting list for an 'active family dog, great with kids, good for the outdoors' So they crossed the dogs they felt would fit these families.

So I'm not saying don't adopt a shelter dog, I'm just stating the truth that way more information is known from the breeder of your dog than a random shelter volunteer guessing at the breed, performing 2-3 controlled tests about temperament then listing them up for adopting as 'great with kids'

If you want to get a dog, and don't want to play the gamble of 'I wonder if this dog I just got from the pound has a life threatening genetic fault that will display itself later on in life and cost me thousands of dollars that I can't afford. Or The website said the dog it good with kids, we'll see when we get home'

Then I suggest going to a breeder.

But if a dog with an unknown past, unknown health, and behavioral past doesn't bother you, then sure go adopt a shelter dog. Godspeed to you."
